In a significant milestone for maritime technology, Ericsson, Leonardo, and the Italian Navy have successfully trialed 5G standalone (5G SA) capabilities at sea, showcasing the potential for enhanced connectivity and digital transformation in the naval sector. According to a press release from Ericsson, the live trials were conducted over a prolonged period, testing 5G SA data communication, on-board connectivity, and naval vessel systems in both daytime and nighttime operational conditions. The demonstration highlighted the ability to maintain long-range 5G connectivity, a critical requirement for modern naval operations. 'This successful trial of 5G standalone technology at sea represents an important step forward in enhancing the capabilities of naval forces,' said Emanuele Massimo Tagliaferri, Vice President and Head of Ericsson Italy.
