A new 110MW microgrid solution in Ireland aims to support data centre growth without burdening the national grid.

In a significant development for the European maritime industry, Pure DC and AVK have deployed the continent's first data centre microgrid in Ireland. Designed to support phased data centre delivery without straining Ireland's national grid, this scalable 110MW energy solution is expected to ease constraints and help accelerate cloud and AI deployments in the region. According to the press release, the first-of-its-kind microgrid 'complements long–term grid infrastructure plans' by providing immediate capacity. This innovative approach is particularly important as Ireland's data centre sector continues to expand rapidly, with the country positioning itself as a hub for cloud and digital infrastructure. 'Phased data centre delivery is critical, and this microgrid solution allows us to bring capacity online quickly to meet growing demand,' said Pure DC's CEO. 'Partnering with AVK, we've developed a scalable model that can be replicated across Europe to support the digital economy's infrastructure needs.' The announcement highlights the maritime industry's increasing focus on sustainable, resilient energy solutions to power the digital transformation. As data centres become more integral to global trade and logistics, innovative approaches like microgrids will be essential for meeting the sector's growing power requirements without overburdening national grids.
