Siemens Energy delivers the first of seven transformers for the first direct electricity link between the UK and Germany, a major infrastructure project to boost cross-border energy transmission.

In a significant milestone for the first direct electricity link between the UK and Germany, Siemens Energy has delivered the first of seven transformers that will help power the groundbreaking interconnector project. According to Offshore Energy, the transformers are a critical component of the 'NeuConnect' interconnector, which will enable the exchange of renewable energy between the two countries when it becomes operational in 2028. The 1.4 GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link will be the first electricity highway directly connecting the UK and Germany, strengthening energy security and supporting the transition to clean power in both nations. 'NeuConnect' is a joint venture between Meridian Power Ventures, Allianz Capital Partners, and Kansai Electric Power, and is expected to cost around £2.8 billion to develop. Once complete, the 200-mile subsea cable system will be able to transmit enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes. The delivery of the first transformer is an important step forward for the project, which has faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions. Siemens Energy will deliver a total of seven transformers to support the interconnector's operations, with the remaining six set to arrive over the coming months. 'NeuConnect' is part of a broader effort by the UK and Germany to enhance cross-border energy infrastructure and integration, supporting renewable energy goals and improving grid resilience on both sides of the North Sea. As the maritime industry plays a crucial role in facilitating these large-scale energy projects, this milestone underscores the sector's importance in the transition to a sustainable, interconnected energy future.
