Freight Market Recovery in 'Full Swing'

By MGN EditorialMarch 3, 2026 at 05:05 PM

Logistics Managers' Index shows freight market recovery gaining momentum in February.

According to the latest Logistics Managers' Index (LMI) report, the freight market recovery is in 'full-swing' as of February 2023. The LMI, a monthly survey of supply chain professionals, showed continued strength across key freight and logistics metrics. 'The freight market recovery is in full-swing, with the LMI registering its highest reading since the index began in 2016,' said Zac Rogers, assistant professor of supply chain management at Colorado State University and a researcher for the LMI. 'Inventory levels, transportation utilization, and transportation prices all remain elevated, indicating that the freight market is still quite robust.' The LMI's overall index registered 69.2 in February, up from 67.2 in January. Readings above 50 indicate expansion, so the February figure points to accelerating growth in the freight and logistics sectors. Key components of the index, including inventory levels, transportation utilization, and transportation prices, all remained elevated compared to historical norms. 'The strength we're seeing in the freight market is a positive sign for the broader economy,' said Zac Rogers. 'High inventory levels, strong transportation demand, and rising prices all suggest that consumer spending and manufacturing activity remain robust, despite concerns about a potential recession.' The LMI report provides a valuable barometer for the health of the freight and logistics industries, which are critical components of the global maritime supply chain. The continued recovery signals that shipping volumes, port activity, and other key maritime metrics are likely to remain strong in the coming months, according to industry analysts. While challenges such as port congestion, equipment shortages, and rising fuel costs persist, the overall trajectory of the freight market appears to be trending in a positive direction, the LMI data suggests.
