Frontera Energy Secures LNG Contract with Ecopetrol to Back FSRU Lease at Puerto Bahía

Canada's Frontera Energy Corporation has locked in an LNG supply agreement with Ecopetrol to underwrite a floating storage and regasification unit lease, marking a decisive strategic shift away from exploration and production toward energy infrastructure.

Canada's Frontera Energy Corporation has taken a significant step in its corporate transformation, securing a long-term LNG contract with Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol to underwrite a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) lease, according to Offshore Energy. The agreement signals the completion of Frontera's pivot from a traditional exploration and production operator to a pure-play energy infrastructure company. The company is now concentrating its commercial strategy on three core growth pillars: liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and container throughput — all centred on its Puerto Bahía terminal on Colombia's Caribbean coast. The Ecopetrol contract provides the commercial foundation necessary to support the FSRU lease commitment, a critical step in de-risking the infrastructure investment and securing long-term revenue visibility. FSRUs have become an increasingly favoured solution across Latin American and emerging markets for rapid LNG import capacity deployment, offering flexibility and lower capital expenditure compared to onshore regasification terminals. Puerto Bahía, a deep-water multi-purpose port facility near Cartagena, positions Frontera at the intersection of Colombia's growing energy import needs and its expanding containerised trade flows. By anchoring an FSRU at the terminal, the company aims to serve domestic gas demand while leveraging the port's existing infrastructure for LPG handling and container operations. The move reflects a broader trend in the LNG sector, where midstream infrastructure players are increasingly seeking offtake agreements with creditworthy counterparties — such as national oil companies — before committing to vessel charters or terminal leases. Ecopetrol's involvement lends the project considerable commercial credibility and aligns with Colombia's energy security objectives as the country navigates a transition away from domestic gas production declines. For Frontera, the strategic repositioning represents a calculated bet that stable, contracted infrastructure revenues will deliver more consistent shareholder returns than the capital-intensive and price-volatile upstream business. The company's full exit from exploration and production underscores the conviction behind this transformation. Industry observers will be watching closely as Frontera moves toward operationalising the FSRU arrangement, with the Puerto Bahía terminal expected to become a key LNG import hub serving Colombia's industrial and power generation sectors.
