Hapag-Lloyd in Talks to Acquire Zim for $3.5 Billion

By MGN EditorialFebruary 15, 2026 at 08:25 PM

Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's largest container shipping lines, is in advanced negotiations to acquire the Israeli flag carrier Zim Integrated Shipping Services.

In a move that would significantly reshape the global container shipping landscape, Hapag-Lloyd has confirmed it is in advanced negotiations to acquire Zim Integrated Shipping Services for an estimated $3.5 billion. According to a statement from Hapag-Lloyd, the two companies are 'in advanced negotiations' regarding a potential acquisition, though the final terms and conditions are still being finalized. The acquisition, if completed, would mark one of the largest deals in the container shipping industry in recent years. Zim, headquartered in Haifa, Israel, is a leading global container shipping company with a fleet of over 100 vessels. The company has a strong presence in key trade lanes, including the Asia-Europe, Transpacific, and Transatlantic routes. By acquiring Zim, Hapag-Lloyd would bolster its market share and strengthen its position as a top-tier global container shipping operator. 'This potential acquisition aligns with Hapag-Lloyd's strategic goal of expanding its global footprint and enhancing its service offerings to customers,' said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, in the company's statement. 'Zim's complementary network and customer base would create significant synergies and value for both companies.' The move comes amid a period of consolidation in the container shipping industry, as larger players seek to gain economies of scale and improve operational efficiency. In recent years, several major mergers and acquisitions have reshaped the competitive landscape, including the merger of CMA CGM and APL, and the acquisition of Hamburg Süd by Maersk Line. The potential Hapag-Lloyd-Zim deal is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. If completed, it would represent a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of the global container shipping industry.
