South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured a major containership order from liner operator HMM.

South Korea's flagship liner operator HMM has been linked to a new feeder containership order at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, according to industry reports. Shipbroking sources say HMM is behind a contract disclosed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering covering 10 container vessels worth KRW823.7bn ($553 million). The order is for 2,800 TEU feeder ships, a size well-suited for regional Asian trade routes. The deal represents a significant investment by HMM as it continues to modernize and expand its fleet. The company has been actively ordering new ships in recent years to keep pace with growing demand and replace aging tonnage. "This order underscores HMM's commitment to fleet renewal and its confidence in the container shipping market," said one analyst quoted by the maritime news site Splash247. "Feeder ships of this size are a core part of HMM's network, supporting its hub-and-spoke operations across Asia." The order also provides a welcome boost for HD Hyundai, one of South Korea's leading shipbuilders. The company has struggled with a downturn in newbuild orders in recent years but is now seeing increased activity, particularly in the containership segment. "HD Hyundai has a strong track record in this feeder ship size range, which should give HMM assurance in their ability to deliver quality vessels on time," the analyst added.
