Honolulu Airport Boosts Sustainability with New Electric Transit Trams

Honolulu's airport is adding three new electric transit trams to its Wiki Wiki Shuttle fleet, supporting low-emission mobility through a state electrification contract.

In a move to enhance sustainability and reduce emissions, Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport has added three new electric transit trams to its Wiki Wiki Shuttle fleet. The airport announced the deployment of the MotoEV Electro Transit Buddy trams, along with supporting charging and monitoring infrastructure, through a state fleet electrification contract with Sustainability Partners. 'This investment in electric airport mobility aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing the carbon footprint of airport operations,' said Jade Butay, Director of the Hawaii Department of Transportation. 'The Wiki Wiki Shuttle plays a crucial role in connecting passengers to the terminals, and transitioning to zero-emission electric trams will significantly cut our transportation-related emissions.' According to Sustainability Partners, a public benefit company that helps public entities fund and deploy sustainable infrastructure, the new electric trams will provide a more eco-friendly option for airport visitors and staff. 'Electrifying the Wiki Wiki Shuttle fleet is an important step in Honolulu Airport's sustainability journey,' said Sustainability Partners CEO Tom Sullivan. 'These high-efficiency electric trams will deliver a smooth, quiet ride while eliminating tailpipe emissions.' The addition of the electric trams is part of a broader initiative by the State of Hawaii to electrify its vehicle fleet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. 'Transitioning to electric vehicles is a key strategy in our state's climate action plan,' Butay added. 'We're proud to partner with innovators like Sustainability Partners to make sustainable mobility a reality at our airports and beyond.'
