Hyosung Launches Commercial Bio-BDO Production in Vietnam with $1 Billion Investment
By MGN Editorial•October 19, 2026 at 06:00 PM
South Korean industrial conglomerate Hyosung has commenced commercial production of bio-based butanediol (bio-BDO) in Vietnam, marking a significant step in the company's sustainable materials strategy with implications for maritime and industrial supply chains.
South Korean conglomerate Hyosung has moved to commercialise bio-based butanediol (bio-BDO) production at its Vietnam facility, backed by a US$1 billion investment that positions the company as a major player in the emerging bio-materials sector, according to a PR Newswire release issued on behalf of the company.
Chairman Hyun-Joon Cho is driving the initiative as a core pillar of Hyosung's long-term growth strategy, with the Vietnam plant designed to deliver 50,000 metric tons of annual bio-BDO capacity on a phased basis. The facility forms part of an integrated production network that connects sugarcane-derived raw materials through to finished bio-based spandex, creating a vertically integrated green supply chain.
Bio-BDO is a key intermediate chemical used in the production of spandex fibres, engineering plastics, and polyurethanes — materials that have broad applications across industrial, apparel, and marine sectors. The shift from petrochemical-derived BDO to bio-based alternatives is increasingly relevant to maritime operators and shipbuilders seeking to reduce the carbon footprint of materials used in vessel construction, outfitting, and onboard textiles.
Vietnam's strategic location within Southeast Asia's manufacturing corridor makes the facility well-placed to serve regional and global demand, with the country's established port infrastructure — including the major terminals at Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong — supporting efficient export logistics.
The investment reflects a broader industry trend toward bio-based and low-carbon materials as regulatory pressure mounts across global supply chains. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) decarbonisation targets and growing shipper demand for Scope 3 emissions reductions are accelerating interest in sustainable raw material sourcing at every level of the supply chain.
Chairman Cho's strategy signals that large industrial manufacturers are committing significant capital to bio-based transitions, with Vietnam emerging as a preferred location for sustainable production investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
Hyosung has not disclosed a specific timeline for reaching full 50,000 metric ton annual capacity, but the phased ramp-up suggests production volumes will scale progressively in line with market demand.
