A trio of inventors from South Carolina have developed a new flotation device deployment concept called 'STAY AFLOAT & ALIVE', aimed at improving survival outcomes in emergency water-entry situations.

A group of three inventors based in Lyman, South Carolina, have developed a new flotation device deployment system designed to improve survivability in emergency scenarios involving unplanned water entry, according to a release distributed via PR Newswire. The device, dubbed 'STAY AFLOAT & ALIVE' and filed under InventHelp reference CBA-3422, was conceived with in-flight emergency situations in mind. However, the underlying principles — rapid deployment and energy absorption upon water impact — carry potential relevance for broader maritime safety applications, including man-overboard scenarios and emergency egress from vessels. 'We thought there could be an improved flotation device deployment system for emergency in-flight situations,' said one of the inventors. 'Our design would help absorb some of the energy' associated with high-impact water entry. The invention is currently at the concept and development stage, with InventHelp assisting the inventors in bringing the design to market. No commercial partnerships or regulatory approvals have been announced at this time. While the primary application cited is aviation-related, the maritime safety sector continues to see incremental innovation in personal flotation device (PFD) technology. Regulatory bodies including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and SOLAS maintain strict performance standards for life-saving appliances aboard commercial vessels, and any device seeking maritime certification would need to meet those benchmarks.
