Iran Closes Parts of Hormuz Strait, Russia Warns West Over Vessel Seizures
By MGN Editorial•February 17, 2026 at 08:55 PM
Tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea as Iran conducts military drills and Russia threatens retaliation over potential seizures of its ships.
In a concerning development for global maritime trade, Iran has announced it will be closing parts of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil shipping chokepoints, for several hours on Tuesday as part of military drills, according to state TV reports.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a vital global energy route, with an estimated 20% of the world's oil supply passing through it each day. Any disruption to traffic through the strait could have significant impacts on energy prices and supply chains.
Separately, Russia has issued a stern warning to Western powers, with a top Kremlin aide stating that Russia could deploy its navy to prevent European countries from seizing Russian vessels, and may retaliate against European shipping if Russian ships are impounded. This comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine.
'Russia will not allow the seizure of its vessels and may retaliate against European shipping,' said Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia's Security Council, in comments reported by Russian state media. 'The Russian navy has the capability to effectively protect our country's interests.'
The potential for escalating tensions and disruptions to global maritime trade underscores the fragility of the current geopolitical environment and the need for diplomacy and de-escalation to ensure the free flow of goods and energy resources across the world's oceans.
Industry analysts will be closely monitoring the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea in the coming days and weeks for any further developments that could impact shipping and logistics. Prudent contingency planning may be warranted for companies with exposure to these critical maritime chokepoints.
