Jan De Nul's XL Cable Layer Fleeming Jenkin Begins Sea Trials Ahead of Offshore Energy Expansion
By MGN Editorial•September 1, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Jan De Nul's extra-large cable-laying vessel Fleeming Jenkin has commenced sea trials, marking a significant milestone in the contractor's push to scale its offshore energy installation capabilities.
## Jan De Nul's XL Cable Layer Enters Sea Trials Phase
Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul has reached a major operational milestone with its first extra-large cable-laying vessel (CLV), the *Fleeming Jenkin*, now undergoing sea trials, according to Offshore Energy. A second XL-class cable layer is expected to follow, signalling the company's substantial commitment to expanding its subsea cable installation fleet.
The *Fleeming Jenkin* represents a new generation of purpose-built cable-laying vessels designed to meet the surging global demand for offshore wind farm interconnections and long-distance subsea power transmission infrastructure. Extra-large CLVs of this class are capable of carrying significantly greater cable payloads than conventional vessels, reducing the number of mid-sea cable joins and improving installation efficiency on large-scale projects.
### Strategic Significance for Offshore Wind
The timing of the vessel's sea trials is notable. Offshore wind installation activity is accelerating across Europe, the United States, and Asia-Pacific, driving intense competition among specialist contractors for cable-lay capacity. Jan De Nul's investment in two XL-class CLVs positions the company to compete for the largest and most technically demanding offshore energy contracts in the coming years.
Cable installation has increasingly become a critical bottleneck in offshore wind project delivery, with vessel availability and cable-lay rates directly influencing project timelines and costs. The addition of purpose-built XL tonnage to Jan De Nul's fleet is expected to provide meaningful relief to a market where demand for high-capacity CLVs continues to outpace supply.
Sea trials typically encompass a comprehensive programme of equipment testing, dynamic positioning verification, cable-handling system checks, and propulsion performance assessments before a vessel enters commercial service. Successful completion of this phase will clear the *Fleeming Jenkin* for deployment on live offshore energy projects.
Jan De Nul has not yet disclosed a projected in-service date or confirmed initial project assignments for the vessel, though the company has an established portfolio of offshore wind and subsea cable contracts across multiple regions.
The arrival of the second XL cable layer, once confirmed, will further reinforce Jan De Nul's position as one of the leading marine contractors in the global energy transition supply chain.
