Kongsberg Maritime secures a contract to design and equip four methanol/ethanol-ready handy-size tankers for Brazilian energy company Transpetro.

In a move that underscores the maritime industry's shift towards alternative fuels, Norway-headquartered Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to design and equip four methanol/ethanol-ready handy-size tankers for Brazilian energy company Transpetro. According to the [Offshore Energy](https://www.offshore-energy.biz/kongsberg-maritime-to-design-and-equip-transpetros-new-methanol-ready-tankers/) report, Kongsberg Maritime will be responsible for the overall ship design as well as the delivery of an integrated solution for automation, navigation, and communication systems on the new vessels. The contract is a significant win for Kongsberg Maritime, which has been at the forefront of developing technologies to support the maritime industry's transition to cleaner fuels. Methanol and ethanol are emerging as viable alternatives to traditional bunker fuels, offering the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations. "This contract represents an important milestone in our efforts to support the decarbonization of the shipping industry," said Egil Haugsdal, President of Kongsberg Maritime. "By designing these methanol-ready tankers, we are helping Transpetro future-proof their fleet and take a significant step towards a more sustainable maritime future." The new tankers are expected to be delivered to Transpetro, a subsidiary of Brazilian oil and gas giant Petrobras, by 2025. The contract underscores the growing demand for vessels capable of utilizing alternative fuels as the industry works to meet its emissions reduction targets.
