Largest Oil Supply Disruption in History Amid Russia-Ukraine War

By MGN EditorialMarch 20, 2026 at 08:44 PM

The Russia-Ukraine war has caused the largest supply disruption in the global oil market, with massive crude and gas production shutdowns sending bunker prices and VLCC rates soaring.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has triggered what the International Energy Agency (IEA) has called 'the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.' According to a report from Splash247, 20 days into the war, the numbers bear out this assessment, with massive crude and gas production shutdowns sending bunker prices and VLCC rates skyrocketing. The IEA noted that Russia's oil production could fall by 3 million barrels per day (bpd) by April, which would be the biggest supply loss in the agency's history. This supply crunch, combined with sanctions on Russian energy exports, has sent global oil prices soaring, with Brent crude reaching over $130 per barrel. The impact is being felt across the maritime industry. Splash247 reports that VLCC rates have surged, with owners now able to command over $100,000 per day. Bunker fuel prices have also risen sharply, with very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) in Singapore reaching a record high of over $1,000 per metric ton. 'The scale of the disruption to Russian oil production is unprecedented,' the IEA stated. 'Refiners and traders are shunning Russian oil to an extent that massive volumes of crude and products are set to be displaced.' This upheaval in global energy markets is creating significant challenges and uncertainty for the maritime sector.
