Maersk and Eurogate Plan €1 Billion Upgrade for Bremerhaven Container Hub
By MGN Editorial•February 14, 2026 at 11:35 AM
Maersk and Eurogate are in advanced talks on a €1 billion investment to modernize Bremerhaven's North Sea Terminal, aiming to create Europe's first zero-emission container hub.
In a major move to upgrade port infrastructure and sustainability, Maersk and Eurogate are planning a €1 billion ($1.2 billion) overhaul of the North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven (NTB) in Germany.
According to reports from gCaptain and Splash247, the two companies are in advanced discussions on a long-term partnership that would see significant investments to expand capacity, electrify terminal operations, and establish the facility as Europe's first zero-emission container hub.
Maersk's port operating arm, APM Terminals, already works alongside Eurogate at the NTB terminal. The new investment plan aims to modernize the facility and make it a model for sustainable, emissions-free container handling.
"This €1 billion bet on Bremerhaven is a major statement of intent from two of the industry's biggest players," said the Splash247 report. "It underscores how serious the drive towards decarbonization has become, with electrification of port infrastructure a key part of that."
The upgrade is expected to include expanding container capacity, transitioning to all-electric cargo handling equipment, and installing onshore power supply to enable ships to turn off their engines while at berth. These measures would help eliminate emissions from terminal operations and vessels.
The partnership and investment plan are still in the advanced discussion stage, but industry analysts see it as an important step forward for sustainable port development in Europe. As the maritime sector faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, initiatives like this zero-emission container hub could serve as a model for other major logistics hubs.
