Maersk Takes Over Panama's Port of Balboa as Geopolitical Tensions Disrupt Shipping

Maersk's APM Terminals has begun operations at Panama's Port of Balboa, launching an 18-month stabilization phase amid rising geopolitical risks in the region.

Maersk's APM Terminals has taken the helm at Panama's Port of Balboa on the Pacific side, launching an 18-month stabilization phase designed to restore container movements and maintain continuity of operations, according to gCaptain. The move comes as geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are disrupting global shipping. Iran has rapidly loaded 20.1 million barrels of oil onto tankers from Kharg Island in just six days, tripling January's pace, as the U.S. assembles its largest Middle East force since 2003, the report states. This surge in Iranian oil exports and military buildup in the region could further destabilize the critical maritime chokepoint, potentially impacting container and bulk cargo flows through the Panama Canal. By taking over operations at the Port of Balboa, Maersk is positioning itself to maintain supply chain resilience in the face of these geopolitical risks. 'The 18-month stabilization phase is designed to restore container movements while maintaining the continuity of operations,' gCaptain reported, citing APM Terminals. 'This move comes as the global supply chain faces increasing uncertainty due to factors like the Russia-Ukraine war, COVID-19 disruptions, and now rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.' The Port of Balboa is a strategic gateway for containerized trade between North America and Asia, as well as a hub for bulk and breakbulk cargo. Maersk's temporary takeover aims to ensure reliable operations and cargo flows through this critical maritime chokepoint.
