Chinese shipping company Maple Leaf Shipping celebrates its 70th anniversary by acquiring its largest vessel to date, a 206,300 DWT newcastlemax bulk carrier.

In a move to mark its 70th year in business, China's Maple Leaf Shipping has purchased its largest vessel to date - a 206,300 DWT newcastlemax bulk carrier. According to broker sources cited by Splash247, the privately-owned shipping company is behind the acquisition of the 2005-built vessel previously known as the Cape Merlin, which has now been renamed ES Bri. The newcastlemax purchase represents a significant milestone for Maple Leaf Shipping, which has steadily grown its fleet over the past seven decades. "This acquisition demonstrates the company's continued commitment to fleet expansion and modernization as it enters its eighth decade of operations," said industry analyst James Thompson. Maple Leaf Shipping was founded in 1952 and has established itself as a major player in the Chinese dry bulk market. The addition of the newcastlemax vessel, one of the largest ship classes, will bolster the company's capabilities in transporting large cargoes of commodities like iron ore and coal. "Maple Leaf's decision to invest in a newcastlemax is a vote of confidence in the continued strength of the dry bulk shipping sector," Thompson added. "As the global economy recovers, we're likely to see increased demand for the transportation of essential raw materials, which plays to the strengths of versatile vessels like this one."
