Maritime Industry Briefing: Hong Kong Newcomer Places Feeder Newbuilding Order; Aker BP and Viridien Forge Norwegian Seismic Partnership
By MGN Editorial•June 10, 2026 at 01:56 PM
A previously unknown Hong Kong operator has entered the feeder containership market with an order for up to eight bangkokmax vessels at Xinle Shipyard, while Aker BP and Viridien announce a five-year seismic data collaboration in Norway.
## Hong Kong Newcomer Books Up to Eight Feeders at Xinle Shipyard
A little-known Hong Kong company has made a notable debut in the containership newbuilding market, placing an order for four firm 1,900 teu bangkokmax feeder vessels at China's Xinle Shipyard, according to Alphaliner as reported by Splash247.
Synelysia Limited, the emerging operator behind the order, has also secured two separate sets of options that could bring the total number of vessels to as many as eight units. The bangkokmax designation refers to vessels sized to transit the shallow draft constraints of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, making them well-suited for intra-Asian and Southeast Asian feeder trades.
The order adds to a broader trend of new entrants capitalising on sustained demand in the feeder segment, where capacity constraints and elevated freight rates have continued to attract speculative investment. Xinle Shipyard, a Chinese yard with a growing presence in the small-to-mid-range containership sector, has been increasingly active in securing feeder newbuilding contracts.
The identity and commercial backing of Synelysia Limited remain unclear, though the scale of the commitment — potentially eight vessels — signals serious intent in the feeder market.

## Aker BP and Viridien Partner on Norwegian OBN Seismic Exploration
Viridien, the geoscience and technology company formerly known as CGG, has entered into a strategic partnership with Norwegian oil and gas operator Aker BP to advance exploration activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, Splash247 reports.
The agreement establishes a five-year cooperation framework focused on multi-client ocean bottom node (OBN) seismic data acquisition, imaging, and technology development. The partnership is designed to align the two companies' strategic priorities and accelerate the delivery of high-resolution subsurface data to support Aker BP's exploration and appraisal programmes.
OBN seismic technology has become increasingly important in complex geological environments such as those found in parts of the Norwegian Continental Shelf, offering superior data quality compared to conventional towed-streamer methods. The multi-client model allows data costs to be shared across multiple industry participants, improving the economics of frontier and near-field exploration.
The collaboration reflects continued investment in Norwegian upstream exploration at a time when the country's petroleum sector remains a cornerstone of European energy supply. Viridien's rebranding from CGG earlier in the decade signalled a broader strategic pivot toward technology and data services, and this agreement underscores that direction.
