Maritime Energy Briefing: LCO2 Carrier Advances Northern Lights Project as Sea Lion Eyes Second FPSO for Falklands Expansion
By MGN Editorial•May 20, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Bernhard Schulte's first liquefied CO2 carrier moves closer to operational readiness for the Northern Lights carbon storage project, while the Sea Lion oil development in the North Falkland Basin explores a second FPSO deal to accelerate production growth.
## Maritime Energy Briefing: Carbon Transport and Offshore Development in Focus
Two significant offshore energy developments are drawing industry attention this week, spanning the emerging carbon capture and storage (CCS) shipping sector and conventional oil production expansion in the South Atlantic.
### Bernhard Schulte LCO2 Carrier Advances Toward Northern Lights
Bernhard Schulte's first liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier has moved a step closer to joining the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage project, according to Offshore Energy. The vessel is the fourth LCO2 carrier destined for the landmark Norwegian CCS initiative, which forms a critical component of Europe's industrial decarbonisation infrastructure.
The Northern Lights project — a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies — is designed to receive captured CO2 from industrial emitters across Europe, transport it by ship to Norway, and permanently store it beneath the North Sea seabed. The addition of Bernhard Schulte's vessel to the project's dedicated fleet underscores the growing demand for specialised LCO2 carriers as CCS supply chains mature.
The development signals continued momentum in a nascent but strategically important shipping segment, with operators and shipowners investing in purpose-built tonnage to support Europe's net-zero commitments.
### Sea Lion Project Eyes Second FPSO to Accelerate Falklands Output
In the South Atlantic, the Sea Lion oil project in the North Falkland Basin (NFB) is exploring the procurement of a second floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit to expedite capacity expansion, Offshore Energy reports. With Phase 1 of the development on track for first oil in 2028, project stakeholders are assessing options to fast-track subsequent phases and maximise production uplift.
The strategy reflects a broader industry trend of phased FPSO deployments to manage capital expenditure while preserving the option for accelerated development. Securing a second FPSO at an early stage could allow parallel development activities, reducing the timeline between production phases and improving overall project economics.
The North Falkland Basin has long been regarded as a frontier deepwater province with substantial resource potential. Progress on Sea Lion represents one of the most advanced offshore development projects in the region, and the dual-FPSO strategy, if confirmed, would mark a significant scaling of ambition for the asset.
