Maritime Industry Briefing: AD Ports' $835M Brazil Acquisition Leads Wave of Strategic Moves

By MGN EditorialJune 2, 2026 at 06:00 PM

AD Ports Group makes its largest-ever acquisition with an $835 million deal for a Brazilian agri-bulk terminal operator, while Eastern Pacific Shipping and Champion Tankers launch a new MR tanker pool and Damen advances fuel-flexible tug technology.

## AD Ports Enters South America with Record $835M Acquisition AD Ports Group has marked a significant strategic milestone with its largest acquisition to date, agreeing to purchase Brazilian agri-bulk terminal operator Corredor Logística e Infraestrutura (CLI) for AED 3.1 billion ($835 million), according to Splash247. The deal represents the Abu Dhabi-based ports and logistics conglomerate's entry into the South American market and signals a major expansion of its global terminal footprint. CLI operates key agri-bulk infrastructure in Brazil, one of the world's largest agricultural exporters, positioning AD Ports to capture growing commodity flows from the region. The acquisition aligns with the group's stated strategy of building a diversified, fast-growing international logistics network beyond its Gulf base. The deal is expected to strengthen AD Ports' handling capacity for grain, soybeans, and other bulk agricultural commodities that are central to global food supply chains. ## Eastern Pacific and Champion Tankers Launch IMO II MR Pool In a move aimed at consolidating commercial strength in the product and chemical tanker sector, Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and Champion Tankers have joined forces to launch a new IMO II medium-range (MR) tanker pool, Splash247 reports. The Singapore-based initiative will commence operations combining eight vessels under a single commercial platform, enhancing scheduling flexibility and cargo coverage for charterers. IMO II-rated MR tankers are capable of carrying a wide range of clean petroleum products and chemicals, making pool arrangements particularly effective for optimising vessel utilisation across diverse cargo types. The partnership reflects a broader industry trend of operators seeking scale and efficiency through collaborative commercial structures rather than outright consolidation. ## Damen Advances Fuel-Flexible Tug Technology On the technology front, Damen Shipyards is promoting its Fuel Flexible Tug series as a solution to one of the maritime industry's most pressing challenges: the energy transition, according to gCaptain. The vessels are engineered to operate on multiple fuel types, allowing operators to adapt to evolving fuel availability and regulatory requirements without committing to a single energy pathway. The fuel-flexible approach is gaining traction among port operators and tug owners who face uncertainty over which alternative fuels — whether LNG, methanol, hydrogen, or ammonia — will ultimately dominate. By designing vessels capable of switching between fuel sources, Damen is positioning its tugs as a hedge against regulatory and market volatility in the years ahead. ## Industry Notes Beyond core maritime developments, Trillium Flow Technologies, a provider of engineered flow control products relevant to marine and offshore applications, announced the sale of its French valves operations to nuclear energy firm Framatome, per PR Newswire. Separately, Day & Zimmermann and Deep Fission announced a partnership to construct an underground small modular reactor (SMR), a development that may have longer-term implications for shore-based port and industrial energy supply as the SMR sector matures.
