Maritime Launch Services and Galaxia have announced a partnership to develop an autonomous flight safety system for Spaceport Nova Scotia, advancing Canada's sovereign launch capability in the Atlantic region.
## Maritime Launch Services and Galaxia Unite on Spaceport Safety Technology
Maritime Launch Services Inc. (CBOE: MAXQ) (OTCQB: MAXQF) and technology firm Galaxia have announced a strategic partnership to develop an Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) for Spaceport Nova Scotia, according to a joint statement released on 7 October 2026.
The collaboration marks a significant step forward for Canada's emerging commercial space launch sector, with both Atlantic Canadian companies working to establish a domestically developed flight safety capability at the Nova Scotia facility. An autonomous flight safety system is a critical component of any licensed launch site, responsible for monitoring vehicle trajectory in real time and initiating flight termination if a launch vehicle deviates from its approved flight corridor — a function traditionally dependent on range safety officers and ground-based systems.
'This partnership reflects the growing depth of Nova Scotia's space and defence ecosystem,' the companies said in their announcement. By developing the AFSS domestically, Maritime Launch Services aims to reduce reliance on foreign safety infrastructure and strengthen Canada's sovereign launch credentials — a priority that has gained increased policy attention as allied nations compete to develop independent access to space.
Maritime Launch Services has been developing Spaceport Nova Scotia as Canada's first commercial orbital launch facility, targeting the small satellite launch market. The site's high-inclination launch corridors over the North Atlantic make it particularly well-suited for sun-synchronous and polar orbits, which are in strong demand from Earth observation and communications satellite operators.
The integration of an autonomous flight safety system is widely regarded as a prerequisite for achieving a full launch licence from the Canadian Space Agency and Transport Canada. Developing that capability in-house, through a partnership with a Canadian technology provider, positions Maritime Launch Services to meet regulatory requirements while contributing to the broader growth of Canada's aerospace and defence industrial base.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed. Both companies indicated that further technical details would be shared as the programme advances.
