Ammonia-Powered Offshore Vessel and Other Maritime Tech Advancements
By MGN Editorial•February 27, 2026 at 04:00 PM
A roundup of recent news on emerging maritime technologies, including the first offshore vessel to operate on ammonia, electrically-driven compressor trains for an FPSO, and public funding for floating solar research.
The maritime industry continues to make strides in adopting new sustainable technologies, as evidenced by several recent announcements.
**First Offshore Vessel to Run on Ammonia**
According to Offshore Energy, Norwegian offshore vessel owner Eidesvik Offshore has tasked Halsnøy Dokk with the conversion of one of its platform supply vessels to run on ammonia. This will mark the first time an offshore vessel operates using the alternative fuel. Ammonia is seen as a promising zero-emission solution for the maritime sector as it does not produce carbon dioxide during combustion. The converted vessel is expected to be operational by this autumn, representing an important milestone in the industry's decarbonization efforts.
**Electrically-Driven Compressors for Guyana-Bound FPSO**
Also reported by Offshore Energy, Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) has been selected to deliver its electrically driven compressor technology for a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel bound for the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana. This technology is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to traditional compressor systems. The FPSO, operated by MODEC, will play a key role in developing Guyana's offshore oil and gas resources.
**Public Funding for Floating Solar Research**
In Norway, Ocean Sun has secured €710,000 in public funding to advance the performance of its floating solar technology, as reported by Offshore Energy. The company's floating solar platforms are designed for offshore applications, leveraging the vast ocean areas available for renewable energy generation. This investment will support R&D efforts to improve the efficiency and reliability of these systems, contributing to the growing adoption of offshore renewable energy solutions.
These announcements demonstrate the maritime industry's commitment to exploring and implementing innovative technologies that can reduce environmental impact and support the transition to a more sustainable future. As the industry continues to navigate the challenges of decarbonization, we can expect to see more exciting advancements in the months and years ahead.
