Maryland American Water Granted New Rates by Public Service Commission

Maryland American Water receives approval for new water rates to support $22 million in infrastructure investments.

According to a press release from PR Newswire, the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved a settlement for new water rates for Maryland American Water. The approved rates will support $22 million in completed infrastructure investments, marking the first rate adjustment for the utility since 2019. 'The approved rates will allow us to continue making critical infrastructure investments to enhance service reliability and water quality for our customers,' said Eric Thornburg, President of Maryland American Water. 'We are committed to providing high-quality, affordable water service and this rate adjustment helps us achieve that goal.' The new rates are effective immediately and will impact residential, commercial, and industrial customers across Maryland American Water's service area. The utility says the adjustments are necessary to cover the costs of system upgrades and maintenance to ensure the continued delivery of safe, reliable water. This rate case approval comes as many water utilities across the U.S. are seeking to raise prices to fund much-needed improvements to aging infrastructure. Analysts note that significant investment will be required in the coming decades to upgrade water treatment plants, distribution pipes, and other critical assets.
