In a move that could impact maritime trade, Mexican authorities are taking steps to cancel permits for over 350 steel importers in the country. According to FreightWaves, the government is targeting companies it alleges have been involved in 'irregular' steel imports. The crackdown is part of Mexico's efforts to protect its domestic steel industry. 'The Mexican government is trying to strengthen its domestic steel production and limit imports,' said Sergio Ornelas, director of the Mexican Association of Steel (Canacero). The news comes as another story out of the Mexico-U.S. border region involves a $4.5 million Amazon logistics fraud scheme. Two Phoenix-area men were sentenced for their roles in the scheme, which involved stealing packages and defrauding the e-commerce giant. According to The Maritime Executive, the men exploited Amazon's 'Flex' delivery program to carry out the fraud. These developments underscore the complex trade and logistics dynamics at play along the vital Mexico-U.S. supply chain corridor.
