Moldova Celebrates 25 Years of National Wine Day

By MGN EditorialFebruary 14, 2026 at 11:35 AM

The Republic of Moldova, a small country with big wine ambitions, celebrates the 25th anniversary of its National Wine Day holiday in 2026.

The Republic of Moldova, a small country nestled between Romania and Ukraine, is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 - the 25th anniversary of its National Wine Day holiday. This annual celebration, which takes place on the second Saturday of September, has become a defining element of Moldovan national identity and a source of pride for the country's thriving wine industry. According to a press release from the Moldovan government, National Wine Day 'turns 25' this year, underscoring the country's deep-rooted connection to viticulture. 'Few places in the world celebrate wine as a defining element of national identity through an annual national holiday,' the release states. 'The Republic of Moldova is among these rare destinations.' Moldova, which is roughly the size of the U.S. state of Maryland, has long punched above its weight when it comes to wine production. The country is home to over 150,000 hectares of vineyards and produces an estimated 200-300 million liters of wine per year, much of which is exported to neighboring European markets as well as further afield. Major wine-producing regions include Purcari, Cricova, and Milestii Mici, the latter of which boasts the world's largest wine cellar. 'National Wine Day is a celebration of Moldova's centuries-old winemaking traditions and the country's ambitions to become a global wine powerhouse,' said Vasile Tarlev, Moldova's Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, in the press release. 'It's an opportunity for us to showcase our unique terroir, innovative producers, and the deep cultural significance of wine in Moldovan society.' The 25th anniversary celebrations will include wine tastings, cultural performances, and other festivities across the country, according to the government. Industry leaders will also use the occasion to discuss strategies for further developing Moldova's wine export markets and promoting the country's wine tourism offerings. While Moldova may be small in size, its aspirations for its wine sector are anything but modest. The country's National Wine Day celebrations in 2026 will underscore its commitment to cementing its reputation as a premier wine destination on the global stage.
