MSC Downgrades India-Europe/Med Network Amid Transshipment Cargo Woes

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has downgraded its India-Europe/Mediterranean network due to declining transshipment cargo volumes at Indian ports following a government decision to revoke the cabotage waiver.
In a move that reflects the shifting dynamics in the global maritime industry, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced plans to downgrade its India-Europe/Mediterranean network. This decision comes in the wake of declining transshipment cargo handling at Indian ports, a trend that is expected to continue following a recent government decision to revoke the cabotage waiver that foreign-flag carriers have enjoyed since 2018.
According to the Journal of Commerce, the cabotage waiver allowed foreign-flag carriers to transport cargo between Indian ports, a practice that had helped drive growth in transshipment volumes at hubs like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mundra Port. However, the Indian government's decision to rescind this waiver is now poised to disrupt these established trade routes, forcing MSC to reevaluate its network strategy.
