MSC Reportedly Acquires Majority Stake in Ukraine's Pivdennyi Container Terminal

Mediterranean Shipping Co is linked to the acquisition of a 51% stake in the TIS container terminal at Pivdennyi, Ukraine, marking a significant move by the world's largest container line into a strategically important Black Sea port.
Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has reportedly secured a majority stake in the Transinvestservice (TIS) Container Terminal at Pivdennyi, Ukraine, according to Splash247. The deal would see the Geneva-headquartered carrier acquire 51% of the facility, positioning it as the controlling shareholder in one of Ukraine's key container handling operations.
Pivdennyi — formerly known as Yuzhny — is a deep-water port located in the Odesa region, situated between Ukraine's third-largest city and the sea-river port of Mykolaiv. The port has historically served as a critical gateway for Ukrainian cargo, particularly bulk commodities, and its container terminal represents a significant piece of the country's maritime infrastructure.
If confirmed, the acquisition would underscore MSC's continued appetite for terminal investments as part of its broader vertical integration strategy. In recent years, MSC has aggressively expanded its port and terminal holdings globally, seeking to secure dedicated capacity and reduce dependence on third-party terminal operators.
The timing of the reported deal is notable given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has severely disrupted Black Sea shipping lanes since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian ports, including those in the Odesa region, have faced significant operational challenges, though efforts to maintain and restore cargo flows have continued throughout the conflict.
A controlling stake in TIS would give MSC a strategic foothold in the region ahead of any post-war reconstruction and trade recovery, a period during which Ukrainian port throughput could be expected to rebound substantially.
MSC has not publicly confirmed the transaction at the time of reporting. Splash247 first reported the development, citing sources familiar with the matter. Further details regarding the deal's valuation and timeline have not been disclosed.
The acquisition, if finalised, would represent one of the most significant foreign investments in Ukrainian port infrastructure since the start of the conflict, and would signal continued confidence from major shipping players in the long-term viability of Ukraine's maritime trade corridors.
