New Indian Shipowner Emerges as Ashapura Shipping Acquires Handysize Bulk Carrier

By MGN EditorialFebruary 16, 2026 at 03:23 PM

Ashapura Shipping Group, a logistics company in India, has become a shipowner by acquiring a 14-year-old handysize bulk carrier from Wilmar.

In a move that signals the growing ambitions of Indian maritime companies, Ashapura Shipping Group, a logistics firm based in Kandla, India, has acquired a 14-year-old handysize bulk carrier from agribusiness giant Wilmar. The vessel, formerly known as Arawana, has been renamed Imperial Varalaxmi, though the purchase price was not disclosed. According to the report from Splash247, Ashapura Shipping was founded in the early 2000s and has primarily operated in the logistics space. This acquisition marks the company's foray into shipowning, diversifying its business model and expanding its maritime footprint. The purchase of the handysize bulker, which is a common vessel type for regional trade, suggests that Ashapura sees opportunities in the dry bulk shipping market, perhaps catering to India's growing commodity import and export needs. As the Indian economy continues to develop, domestic shipping companies are increasingly looking to build their own fleets to serve the country's maritime trade requirements. This move by Ashapura Shipping aligns with the broader trend of Indian companies strengthening their presence in the global shipping industry. In recent years, firms like Adani Ports, Essar Shipping, and Shipping Corporation of India have all taken steps to grow their vessel operations and maritime logistics capabilities. The emergence of Ashapura Shipping as a new shipowner adds another player to the country's dynamic maritime landscape.
