Danish power cable manufacturer and installation firm NKT has secured its largest ever single project award, a €2.2 billion contract for a major UK subsea electricity transmission link.

In a significant development for the offshore energy sector, Danish power cable manufacturer and installation firm NKT has announced its largest ever single project award. The company has secured a €2.2 billion contract to deliver the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for a major new subsea electricity transmission link in the UK. According to the announcement from NKT, the contract is for the 'Nautilus' interconnector project, which will connect the electricity grids of the UK and Belgium. The project is being developed by National Grid Ventures and Elia Group. NKT will be responsible for the design, manufacture, installation and protection of the 200-kilometer subsea cable system, which will have a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts. 'This is a landmark contract for NKT and a testament to our technological leadership and project execution capabilities in the growing offshore grid sector,' said Alexander Kara, CEO of NKT. 'The Nautilus project will play a crucial role in strengthening the UK's energy security and supporting its transition to renewable power.' The Nautilus interconnector is expected to become operational in 2028, helping to integrate more offshore wind energy into the UK grid and facilitate cross-border electricity trading. NKT's contract award underscores the significant investments being made in Europe's offshore power transmission infrastructure to support the energy transition. The news follows other recent high-profile offshore grid project wins for NKT, including a €1 billion contract for the Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm in the UK. This latest €2.2 billion award represents the largest single project in the company's history.
