Nordic American Tankers Continues Fleet Optimization with $40M Suezmax Sale

By MGN EditorialMarch 18, 2026 at 02:00 AM

Tanker owner Nordic American Tankers has sold a 2005-built suezmax vessel for around $40 million as part of its strategy to dispose of older tonnage.

New York-listed tanker owner Nordic American Tankers (NAT) has sealed a deal to sell a 2005-built suezmax vessel for approximately $40 million, continuing its fleet optimization efforts. According to a report from Splash247, the Herbjørn Hansson-led company did not disclose the identity of the vessel or the buyer in the transaction. This latest sale follows a string of similar deals as NAT works to streamline its fleet of older tankers. The sale of this vintage suezmax is in line with NAT's strategy to gradually dispose of its older vessels and reinvest in more modern, fuel-efficient tonnage. This approach helps the company maintain a competitive edge in the challenging tanker market by reducing operating costs and improving the overall efficiency of its fleet. 'Selling older vessels and reinvesting in newer tonnage is part of NAT's ongoing fleet renewal program,' Hansson commented, according to the Splash247 report. 'We continue to optimize our fleet to enhance our competitiveness and create value for our shareholders.' The tanker market has faced headwinds in recent years due to factors such as oversupply, geopolitical tensions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. By strategically managing its fleet composition, NAT aims to position itself for success in the evolving market conditions. This sale is the latest in a series of divestments by NAT as it works to modernize its fleet. The company has been actively pursuing opportunities to sell older vessels and reinvest the proceeds into newer, more efficient tonnage that can better withstand the challenges facing the tanker industry.
