Norfolk Southern and CMA CGM Launch New 'Truck-Like' Intermodal Service
By MGN Editorial•February 18, 2026 at 09:31 PM
Norfolk Southern and shipping line CMA CGM have partnered to offer a new door-to-door intermodal service that combines the reach of rail with the simplicity of trucking.
In an exclusive report, FreightWaves revealed that Norfolk Southern and global shipping giant CMA CGM have launched a new 'truck-like' intermodal service that aims to provide shippers with a more seamless and efficient door-to-door freight solution.
The new service, which is the result of a strategic partnership between the two companies, will leverage Norfolk Southern's extensive rail network to move containers from port to inland destinations, while also incorporating the 'last-mile' delivery capabilities of CMA CGM's trucking assets. This hybrid approach is designed to offer customers the benefits of intermodal transportation - such as increased capacity, reduced carbon emissions, and lower costs - with the convenience and visibility of a truckload delivery.
'Shippers are increasingly looking for intermodal solutions that can match the speed and flexibility of over-the-road trucking,' said a Norfolk Southern spokesperson. 'This new service allows us to deliver that, while still providing the economies of scale and environmental advantages that rail can offer.'
According to the report, the service will initially be available for select trade lanes, with plans to expand the offering to additional markets in the coming months. CMA CGM noted that the partnership aligns with the company's broader strategy of providing customers with more integrated and sustainable supply chain solutions.
'As the global supply chain continues to evolve, we recognize the need to offer our customers a diverse portfolio of transportation options,' said a CMA CGM executive. 'This new intermodal service, developed in collaboration with Norfolk Southern, is a testament to our commitment to innovation and delivering best-in-class service.'
