NYK Line Acquires Stake in Avenir LNG for Small-Scale LNG Shipping

By MGN EditorialMarch 16, 2026 at 12:01 PM

Japanese shipping giant NYK Line has taken a stake in Avenir LNG, a provider of small-scale LNG carriers and bunkering vessels, through a deal with Stolt-Nielsen Gas.

In a move that signals growing interest in small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping, Japan's Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has acquired a stake in Avenir LNG, a Norway-based owner and operator of small-scale LNG carriers and LNG bunker vessels. According to the *Offshore Energy* report, the deal was struck through NYK Line's agreement with Stolt-Nielsen Gas, a subsidiary of the Oslo Stock Exchange-listed Stolt-Nielsen. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Avenir LNG operates a fleet of small-scale LNG carriers and is developing LNG bunkering infrastructure to support the maritime industry's transition to cleaner fuels. The company's vessels are designed to deliver LNG to areas with limited infrastructure, enabling the increased use of LNG as a marine fuel. 'This investment by NYK Line is a strong endorsement of Avenir LNG's strategy and business model,' said Øivin Iversen, CEO of Avenir LNG. 'We look forward to working closely with NYK Line to further develop our small-scale LNG shipping and bunkering capabilities.' The move by NYK Line, one of the world's largest shipping companies, underscores the growing importance of small-scale LNG solutions in the maritime sector's efforts to reduce emissions and meet stricter environmental regulations. As the industry navigates the transition to alternative fuels, investments in specialized LNG infrastructure and logistics are expected to play a key role. 'NYK Line's decision to acquire a stake in Avenir LNG is a significant development in the small-scale LNG market,' commented a maritime industry analyst. 'It signals that major players see long-term potential in this segment as the shipping industry continues its shift towards cleaner energy sources.'
