Offshore Stimulation Work Planned for California Platform

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has taken steps to enable proposed offshore well stimulation work at a platform off the coast of California.

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has taken a step to lay the groundwork for proposed offshore well stimulation work at a platform off the coast of California, according to Offshore Energy. BOEM has published a draft environmental assessment for the proposed multi-well stimulation project at Platform Esther, an offshore oil and gas facility located about 4 miles off the coast of Huntington Beach, California. The assessment evaluates the potential environmental impacts of the planned well stimulation activities. The proposed project would involve stimulating up to 30 existing wells at the platform through a combination of acid treatments, hydraulic fracturing, and other well enhancement techniques. The goal is to increase oil and gas production from the aging offshore facility. 'The stage is being set for the multi-well stimulation work at Platform Esther,' Offshore Energy reported. 'BOEM is now seeking public comments on the draft environmental assessment before finalizing the document and potentially approving the project.' This development comes as the offshore energy industry continues to explore new ways to extend the productive life of existing infrastructure along the California coast. Offshore well stimulation has become a more common practice in recent years as operators look to maximize output from mature offshore fields.
