Orbia Files Trade Petitions Against Unfair Lithium Hexafluorophosphate Imports from China

Orbia, a major chemical company, has filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against imports of lithium hexafluorophosphate from China, alleging unfair trade practices.

In a move to address unfair competition, Mexichem Fluor Inc., dba Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials (Orbia), has filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against imports of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) from China, according to a press release from Wiley, the law firm representing Orbia. LiPF6 is a critical electrolyte salt used in lithium-ion batteries, which power a wide range of electronic devices and electric vehicles. Orbia, a major global chemical company, alleges that Chinese producers have been dumping LiPF6 in the U.S. market at prices below fair value and receiving unfair government subsidies, causing material injury to the domestic industry. 'Orbia is committed to addressing the unfair trade practices that are harming U.S. producers of this essential battery material,' said Nova Daly, a public policy specialist at Wiley. 'These petitions aim to restore fair competition in the LiPF6 market and support the continued growth of the domestic lithium-ion battery supply chain.' The filing of these trade petitions comes amid growing global demand for lithium-ion batteries and increased focus on securing domestic supply chains for critical materials. As the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors continue to expand, ensuring a level playing field for U.S. producers of key battery components like LiPF6 will be crucial. Orbia's action is the latest development in the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China over a range of products. The outcome of these petitions could have significant implications for the lithium-ion battery industry and the broader maritime supply chain that supports the transportation of these essential materials.
