The Panama Canal Authority discusses upcoming water reservoir projects, decarbonization efforts, and plans to increase transit revenues at a major maritime industry conference.

At the recent CMA Shipping Conference 2026 in Connecticut, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, the Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, outlined the organization's 'Vision 2035' infrastructure plan for the iconic waterway. According to Vásquez Morales, the Panama Canal's key priorities over the next decade include expanding water reservoir capacity to ensure reliable freshwater supply, investing in decarbonization initiatives to reduce the canal's environmental impact, and pursuing strategies to grow transit revenues. 'Water security is a critical challenge, so we are focused on major projects to increase our reservoir storage,' Vásquez Morales told attendees. 'This includes the construction of a new $1.2 billion reservoir that will add 650 million cubic meters of capacity.' The Panama Canal Administrator also highlighted the organization's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including the use of shore-to-ship power for vessels transiting the canal and the development of a carbon offset program for canal users. 'Decarbonization is a key part of our Vision 2035 plan,' Vásquez Morales said. 'We are committed to working with our partners to find innovative solutions that improve the sustainability of the Panama Canal.' In addition to infrastructure and environmental initiatives, the Panama Canal Authority is also exploring ways to increase transit revenues, which have been impacted by global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions in recent years. 'Despite the challenges, we see significant opportunities to grow our business in the years ahead,' Vásquez Morales said. 'By investing in our waterway's capacity and efficiency, we can provide even greater value to our customers and stakeholders.' The Panama Canal's Vision 2035 plan comes at a critical time for the global maritime industry, which continues to navigate a complex landscape of supply chain issues, regulatory changes, and economic uncertainty. As a vital global trade route, the canal's ongoing development will be closely watched by shipping lines, port operators, and other industry players.
