Petrobras Deepwater FPSO Achieves First Gas Injection
By MGN Editorial•March 11, 2026 at 09:42 PM
A Singapore-based offshore solutions provider has confirmed the first gas injection at a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel deployed at one of Petrobras' largest deepwater oil fields in Brazil.
In a significant milestone for Brazil's offshore energy sector, Seatrium has announced the successful first gas injection at a massive FPSO vessel operating in the Petrobras-operated Buzios field, one of the world's largest deepwater oil and gas developments.
The FPSO, which has a production capacity of over 150,000 barrels of oil per day, is a critical component of Petrobras' efforts to ramp up output from its prolific pre-salt reservoirs in the Santos Basin. According to Seatrium, the achievement of first gas injection marks an important step in the FPSO's commissioning and start-up process.
'This is a major milestone that demonstrates the successful integration of our FPSO solution and the start of production from this world-class offshore asset,' said Seatrium's CEO in a statement. 'We are proud to support Petrobras in unlocking the full potential of Brazil's pre-salt resources through this project.'
The Buzios field, which lies in water depths of over 2,000 meters, is one of Petrobras' crown jewels, with estimated recoverable reserves of over 15 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The deployment of this high-capacity FPSO is a key part of the state-owned energy firm's strategy to ramp up production from its prolific deepwater assets and solidify Brazil's position as a global oil and gas powerhouse.
This news comes as the maritime industry continues to closely watch developments in Brazil's offshore sector, which has attracted significant investment from international oil majors and service providers in recent years despite the economic and political turbulence that has periodically roiled the country.
