## Pilbara Ports Awards $37 Million Utah Ring Road Contract
Pilbara Ports Authority has awarded a $37 million contract to Melchor Contracting Pty Ltd for the reconstruction of the Utah Ring Road at the Port of Port Hedland, according to Port Technology International.
The contract represents a substantial commitment to maintaining and upgrading critical landside infrastructure at Port Hedland, which serves as the world's largest bulk export port by tonnage, handling the majority of Australia's iron ore exports destined for Asian markets.
The Cook Labor Government welcomed the announcement, describing it as a significant investment in critical port infrastructure. The project involves the full reconstruction of the Utah Ring Road, a key arterial route within the port precinct that supports the movement of heavy freight and logistics operations essential to the port's day-to-day functioning.
Melchor Contracting Pty Ltd, a Western Australian civil construction firm, was selected to carry out the works. The reconstruction is expected to improve road safety, operational efficiency, and the long-term resilience of port access routes that handle some of the heaviest haulage loads in the country.
Port Hedland is a strategically vital facility for Australia's resources export sector, with iron ore shipments to China and other Asian economies underpinning much of the Pilbara region's economic output. Maintaining robust port infrastructure is considered essential not only for current operational demands but also for accommodating future growth in export volumes.
The investment aligns with broader efforts by Pilbara Ports Authority to modernise and future-proof port facilities across its network, which also includes the ports of Dampier, Ashburton, and Varanus Island. Landside infrastructure upgrades of this scale are critical to ensuring that port precincts can support the increasing size and frequency of heavy vehicle movements associated with bulk commodity exports.
Further details regarding the project timeline and expected completion date have not yet been disclosed.
