Port Houston Logs Record January as Exports Surge

By MGN EditorialFebruary 27, 2026 at 04:00 PM

Port Houston sets new cargo volume record in January, driven by strong export growth, while Corpus Christi freight rises despite a dip in crude oil shipments.

Port Houston reported its largest January on record, with total cargo volume surging 16% year-over-year, according to the latest data from FreightWaves. The strong performance was driven by a 27% increase in exports, offsetting a 3% decline in imports. 'The record-breaking January numbers are a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Port Houston supply chain,' said Roger Guenther, Port Houston's Executive Director. 'Our team has worked hard to keep cargo moving efficiently despite ongoing global supply chain challenges.' The positive results contrast with the situation at the Port of Corpus Christi, where total freight volume rose 6.5% in January despite a 9% drop in crude oil shipments. 'Corpus Christi continues to diversify its cargo mix, with increases in refined products, petrochemicals and other energy-related commodities,' noted Erik Milito, President of the National Ocean Industries Association. The diverging trends highlight the importance of port infrastructure investments and operational efficiency in supporting the maritime industry's recovery from pandemic-related disruptions. As global trade patterns evolve, leading ports will need to adapt to capitalize on emerging opportunities in both imports and exports.
