Port of Klaipėda Breaks Ground on Historic €1 Billion Southern Expansion
By MGN Editorial•August 28, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Lithuania's Port of Klaipėda has commenced site preparation works on its largest-ever infrastructure project, a €1 billion southern port expansion set to significantly increase the facility's capacity and regional competitiveness.
## Port of Klaipėda Launches Landmark €1bn Expansion Programme
The Port of Klaipėda has officially begun work on the most ambitious infrastructure project in its history, with site preparation now underway for a major new port area to be developed in the facility's southern zone, according to Port Technology.
The expansion, valued at approximately €1 billion, will see an entirely new port area constructed over the coming years, positioning Klaipėda — Lithuania's only seaport and the Baltic Sea's northernmost ice-free harbour — for a significant leap in throughput capacity and operational capability.
### Southern Breakwaters to Lead Development
Among the first major structural works to be undertaken is the construction of southern breakwaters, a contract awarded to Tilsta following a competitive tender process. The breakwater infrastructure will form the foundational maritime protection for the new port area, enabling subsequent quay, terminal, and logistics facility development to proceed in a sheltered environment.
Site preparation has already commenced, marking the transition of the project from planning and procurement into active construction — a milestone that underscores the port authority's commitment to delivering the expansion on schedule.
### Strategic Significance for the Baltic Region
Klaipėda's southern expansion carries considerable strategic weight for the broader Baltic maritime corridor. As one of the region's key gateways for cargo flows between Central and Eastern Europe and global shipping lanes, increased capacity at Klaipėda would strengthen Lithuania's logistics infrastructure and enhance the port's ability to compete with rival Baltic hubs.
The project also arrives at a time of heightened focus on Baltic Sea trade resilience, with regional ports investing heavily in modernisation and capacity growth to accommodate shifting cargo patterns and evolving supply chain demands.
### Long-Term Vision
The scale of the investment reflects a long-term vision for Klaipėda's role as a major European port. Once complete, the southern port area is expected to accommodate new terminal operations and support growth across multiple cargo segments, including bulk, container, and potentially offshore energy-related logistics given the Baltic's expanding renewable energy sector.
Further details on construction timelines, additional contract awards, and terminal operator agreements are expected to be announced as the project progresses through its development phases.
