Recycled Carbon Fiber Market Set to Nearly Double by 2031, Presenting Opportunities for Maritime Applications
By MGN Editorial•September 14, 2026 at 02:50 PM
The global recycled carbon fiber market is forecast to reach USD 427 million by 2031, up from USD 224.62 million in 2026, with growing adoption across automotive and aerospace sectors that could signal broader industrial uptake including marine construction.
## Recycled Carbon Fiber Market Poised for Significant Growth Through 2031
The global recycled carbon fiber market is on track to nearly double in value over the next five years, according to a new report from Mordor Intelligence, reaching USD 427 million by 2031 from a current valuation of USD 224.62 million in 2026. The projected compound annual growth rate underscores accelerating demand for sustainable, high-performance materials across multiple heavy industries.
While the Mordor Intelligence report highlights automotive and aerospace as the primary drivers of adoption, the maritime sector stands to benefit from the same underlying trends. Shipbuilders and naval architects have long recognised carbon fiber's exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance — properties that make it attractive for hull construction, superstructures, masts, and interior fittings on both commercial and recreational vessels.
The shift toward *recycled* carbon fiber is particularly relevant for an industry under increasing regulatory and commercial pressure to reduce its environmental footprint. Recycled carbon fiber retains a significant proportion of the mechanical properties of virgin material while requiring substantially less energy to produce, offering shipyards a pathway to lower embodied carbon in new builds without compromising structural integrity.
Cost has historically been a barrier to widespread carbon fiber adoption in commercial shipping, where steel and aluminium remain dominant. However, as recycled carbon fiber supply chains mature and volumes increase — driven by demand from automotive and aerospace manufacturers — economies of scale are expected to bring prices closer to those of conventional materials, potentially accelerating uptake in the marine sector.
The report from Mordor Intelligence also points to growing investment in recycling infrastructure and processing technology as a key enabler of market expansion. Advances in pyrolysis and solvolysis techniques are improving the quality and consistency of reclaimed fiber, addressing concerns that have previously limited its use in structurally demanding applications.
For maritime industry stakeholders — from classification societies assessing new material standards to shipowners evaluating lifecycle costs — the trajectory of the recycled carbon fiber market warrants close attention. As decarbonisation targets tighten and the industry seeks alternatives to energy-intensive conventional materials, recycled composites represent a credible and increasingly commercially viable option.
