Saipem Loses Drillship Deal to Higher Bidder

By MGN EditorialFebruary 27, 2026 at 04:00 PM

Norwegian drillship owner Deep Value Driller has decided to sell its seventh-generation drillship to a higher bidder, leaving Saipem without the contract.

In a blow to Italian energy services company Saipem, Norwegian drillship owner Deep Value Driller has decided to sell its seventh-generation drillship Deep Value Driller to a higher bidder, according to a report from Offshore Energy. The drillship was previously under contract with Saipem, but Deep Value Driller has now opted to go with a different, undisclosed buyer who submitted a higher offer. This development leaves Saipem without the drillship contract it had been counting on. The loss of this deal is a setback for Saipem, which has been working to rebuild its offshore drilling business after a challenging period. The company had planned to utilize the Deep Value Driller to support its operations, but will now need to seek alternative solutions. 'The company is disappointed by this development, but remains focused on executing its strategic plan and delivering value to its clients and shareholders,' a Saipem spokesperson told Offshore Energy. This news comes amid a broader recovery in the offshore drilling market, with improved demand and dayrates driving increased activity. However, the competitive landscape remains intense, with operators carefully weighing their options to secure the most favorable terms.
