Saipem's Subsea Drone Clears Tests Ahead of Offshore Deployment

By MGN EditorialMarch 19, 2026 at 03:39 PM

Saipem's underwater inspection drone FlatFish has completed testing with Petrobras, paving the way for offshore deployment.

Saipem's innovative subsea drone, the FlatFish, has successfully completed a test campaign with Brazil's national oil company Petrobras, clearing the way for its deployment in offshore operations. The FlatFish is an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed by Saipem for subsea inspections and maintenance tasks. According to Offshore Energy, the drone 'has completed a test campaign with Brazil's oil and gas company Petrobras ahead of its offshore deployment.' The successful tests with Petrobras mark a significant milestone for the FlatFish project. Saipem has been developing the drone since 2017, with the goal of using advanced robotics and AI to improve the efficiency and safety of subsea operations. By deploying the FlatFish, oil and gas companies can reduce the need for manned underwater interventions, which are often dangerous and costly. 'The successful test campaign with Petrobras is an important step forward for the FlatFish project,' said a Saipem spokesperson. 'We are excited to bring this innovative technology to the offshore market and support our clients in conducting safer and more efficient subsea operations.' The news comes as the offshore energy sector continues to embrace new technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability. Autonomous and remotely operated vehicles are playing an increasingly important role, allowing operators to gather critical data and perform maintenance without putting human divers at risk.
