Scotland Invests €1B in Subsea Electricity Network Upgrade
By MGN Editorial•February 17, 2026 at 01:12 PM
Five companies selected to help deliver a major subsea electricity network upgrade in Scotland, part of the country's push for renewable energy infrastructure.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution has selected five contract partners to help deliver a €1 billion subsea electricity network upgrade in Scotland, according to an announcement from Offshore Energy.
The project aims to modernize and expand Scotland's subsea electricity transmission network to support the country's growing offshore wind and renewable energy capacity. The five companies selected are Nexans, Prysmian Group, JDR Cable Systems, LS Cable & System, and Sumitomo Electric Industries.
'This landmark investment will future-proof our electricity network, ensuring it can continue to reliably and safely transmit renewable energy from the islands to the mainland for decades to come,' said Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Distribution.
The upgrade will involve laying new high-voltage subsea cables to connect the Scottish islands to the mainland grid, as well as upgrading onshore infrastructure. This is a critical step in Scotland's push to reach its ambitious renewable energy targets, which include generating 50% of the country's total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030.
'Scotland has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world, and this investment will help unlock that potential by ensuring the electricity network can transmit renewable power efficiently,' said Morag Watson, Director of Policy at Scottish Renewables, in comments to The Maritime Executive.
The project is expected to be completed by 2030, helping to future-proof Scotland's electricity network and support the country's transition to clean energy.
