Seadrill, Kongsberg Maritime, and Hanwha Partner on Next-Gen Remote Offshore Drilling Tech

By MGN EditorialMarch 4, 2026 at 09:35 PM

Three maritime technology leaders have formed an alliance to develop the next generation of remote dynamic positioning systems for offshore drilling rigs.

In a significant development for the offshore drilling industry, Seadrill, Kongsberg Maritime (KM), and Hanwha Drilling have announced a strategic partnership to usher in the next generation of remote dynamic positioning (DP) technology. The alliance aims to establish new standards for remote DP operations, which are critical for the safe and efficient positioning of offshore drilling rigs. By combining their expertise, the three companies hope to drive innovation and enhance the reliability and capabilities of remote DP systems. 'This partnership represents a major step forward in remote DP technology,' said Seadrill's CEO, John Fredriksen. 'By working together, we can accelerate the development of solutions that will improve safety, reduce costs, and enable more sustainable offshore drilling operations.' According to Kongsberg Maritime, the new remote DP system will leverage advanced sensors, data analytics, and artificial intelligence to provide enhanced situational awareness and decision-support capabilities for offshore drilling crews. Hanwha Drilling, a leading provider of offshore drilling services, will contribute its operational expertise to ensure the technology meets the industry's evolving needs. 'Remote DP is a game-changer for the offshore sector, allowing for more efficient and flexible drilling operations,' said Hanwha Drilling's COO, Sang-Hoon Lee. 'This collaboration will help us deliver the next level of remote DP capabilities to our clients.' The partnership's work is expected to accelerate the adoption of remote DP technology across the global offshore drilling industry, improving safety, reducing emissions, and enhancing the overall sustainability of offshore operations.
