A roundup of recent maritime news, including the upholding of 30-year sentences for two seafarers in Turkey and the IMO's condemnation of attacks on innocent mariners.
In a concerning development for the global maritime community, a Turkish court has upheld the convictions and 30-year sentences of two seafarers from the Phoenician M vessel, according to Seatrade Maritime. Captain Marko Bekavac and Chief Officer Ali Albokhari were found guilty in 2024 on charges related to the ship's detention, although the Master has since been released while his crewmate remains imprisoned.
The IMO Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, has also expressed grave concern over the recent deaths of seven seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the regional conflict. 'Any attack on innocent seafarers is unacceptable,' Dominguez stated, calling for the protection of mariners caught in the crossfire of geopolitical tensions.
Elsewhere in the industry, Riverdale Mills CFO Deb Krikorian was honored with the 2026 STEP Ahead Award, recognizing her excellence and outstanding leadership in manufacturing. Additionally, the critical minerals market is seeing increased investor interest in antimony, a strategic growth play, while Indian specialty chemicals firms Rubamin and Distil have announced an exclusive partnership to scale high-performance zinc derivatives for the North American personal care sector.
These stories highlight the diversity of issues facing the global maritime industry, from legal challenges for seafarers to supply chain innovations and recognition of industry leaders. As the sector navigates these developments, the safety and wellbeing of mariners remains a top priority for regulators and stakeholders alike.
