Seafarers Trapped in Persian Gulf Face Humanitarian Crisis

By MGN EditorialMarch 20, 2026 at 08:44 PM

Tens of thousands of seafarers remain stranded aboard vessels in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Arabian Sea, facing a growing humanitarian emergency.

A mounting humanitarian crisis is unfolding at sea as tens of thousands of seafarers remain trapped aboard vessels across the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Arabian Sea, according to a report from gCaptain. With tensions high in the region, many ships have been unable to dock or repatriate crews, leaving mariners stranded for months on end. "This is a humanitarian emergency that requires urgent international action," said Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping. "Seafarers are the unsung heroes of global trade, and they should not be abandoned in this way." The crisis has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between Iran and the West, which has disrupted shipping routes and port operations throughout the region. Many vessels have been unable to refuel, reprovision, or rotate crews due to the volatile security situation. "Seafarers are facing immense physical and mental strain, with limited access to medical care, basic supplies, and the ability to return home," Platten added. "This is a rapidly deteriorating situation that demands a coordinated humanitarian response." Industry groups are calling on governments and international organizations to intervene and facilitate the repatriation of stranded crews. Efforts are also underway to provide emergency food, water, and medical assistance to vessels unable to dock. "These seafarers are the backbone of global trade, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion," said Platten. "The maritime community will not rest until this crisis is resolved and our colleagues are safely returned home."
