Shell Completes Divestiture of Gulf of America Deepwater Platform Interest
By MGN Editorial•September 23, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Shell Offshore Inc. has finalised the sale of its 50% non-operated working interest in the Na Kika deepwater platform and associated fields in the Gulf of America, marking a continued reshaping of the energy major's upstream portfolio.
## Shell Exits Na Kika Platform in Gulf of America Asset Sale
Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has completed the sale of its 50% non-operated working interest in the Na Kika platform and associated fields located in the Gulf of America, the company announced on 22 September 2026.
According to a PR Newswire release, the transaction also includes Shell's 100% owned interest in the Coulomb field, representing a meaningful consolidation of the company's deepwater Gulf holdings.
The Na Kika platform is a semi-submersible production facility operating in ultra-deepwater conditions in the Gulf of America, one of the most technically demanding operating environments in the global offshore industry. The platform has been a significant production asset in the region since its commissioning.
### Strategic Portfolio Realignment
The divestiture is consistent with a broader trend among international oil majors to streamline their upstream portfolios, focusing capital and operational resources on higher-margin or strategically prioritised assets. Shell has been actively managing its global asset base, and the Gulf of America transaction reflects ongoing decisions about where the company chooses to deploy long-term investment.
As a non-operated working interest holder, Shell's role at Na Kika was that of a financial and technical partner rather than day-to-day operator, making the asset a candidate for rationalisation as the company refines its portfolio priorities.
### Market Implications
The completion of the sale signals continued activity in the deepwater asset transaction market, where buyers and sellers are actively repositioning ahead of evolving energy demand forecasts and capital allocation strategies. Deepwater Gulf of America assets remain attractive to a range of operators and investment vehicles given their established infrastructure and proven production profiles.
Further details regarding the identity of the buyer and the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the announcement. Industry observers will be watching for any subsequent filings or disclosures that shed light on the valuation and the acquiring party's operational intentions for the platform.
