Shipbuilding Surge Continues as Daehan Secures Suezmax Order

By MGN EditorialMarch 18, 2026 at 02:00 AM

South Korean shipbuilder Daehan Shipbuilding wins another Suezmax crude oil carrier order, nearing its 2024 target with 82% of orders already secured.

The global shipbuilding industry continues its robust recovery, with South Korea's Daehan Shipbuilding announcing a new Suezmax crude oil carrier order. According to Hellenic Shipping News, the company has now secured nine Suezmax orders so far this year, putting it at 82% of its annual order target before the first quarter is even complete. 'This is a remarkable achievement and underscores the strong demand we are seeing across multiple vessel segments,' said a Daehan spokesperson. 'Our order book is filling up quickly as the global economy rebounds and shipping companies look to renew and expand their fleets.' The Suezmax class of crude oil tankers, capable of transporting up to 1 million barrels, has been a particular bright spot, with orders surging in recent months. Industry analysts attribute this to rising oil demand, the need to replace aging tonnage, and an overall bullish outlook for the tanker market. 'Shipyards in China, South Korea, and Japan are all reporting robust order activity, especially for larger vessel classes like Suezmax and VLCC,' noted a report from gCaptain. 'This is a welcome development after a prolonged downturn, and signals that the maritime industry is poised for a period of sustained growth.' As Daehan approaches its 2024 order target at a rapid pace, it joins other major shipbuilders in ramping up production to meet the heightened demand. Industry observers will be watching closely to see if this momentum can be maintained throughout the year and into 2025.
