Shipping Companies Expand Fleets with Newbuild Orders

By MGN EditorialMarch 4, 2026 at 09:35 PM

Major maritime companies are investing in new vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, and offshore platforms, signaling confidence in the industry's future.

Shipping companies are making significant investments in fleet expansion and renewal, with several major newbuild orders reported across the maritime sector. According to Splash247, London-based Zodiac Maritime is continuing its crude carrier renewal program, contracting four 319,000 DWT VLCCs at Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry in China and one additional VLCC at an unspecified Vietnamese shipyard. The Eyal Ofer-controlled owner is stacking up its tanker orderbook as it looks to modernize its fleet. In the bulk carrier segment, Swiss owner Suisse-Atlantique has booked a series of five 63,500 DWT ultramax newbuilds at Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering in China, Splash247 reports. The Andre family-led group is expanding its dry bulk fleet with this latest investment. Meanwhile, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering, a subsidiary of MHB, has secured a four-year contract from Thailand's PTTEP to fabricate up to 11 wellhead platforms for marginal field developments off Sarawak, as reported by Splash247. This offshore project award demonstrates continued investment in oil and gas infrastructure in the region. These fleet expansion moves by major maritime companies signal their confidence in the industry's future prospects, despite the economic uncertainties and sustainability challenges facing the sector. The newbuild orders across the tanker, bulk carrier, and offshore segments indicate a belief that demand for shipping and energy services will remain strong in the years ahead.
