Shipping Faces Workforce Challenges Amid Surging Demand

By MGN EditorialFebruary 27, 2026 at 04:00 PM

Shipping industry leaders warn of labor shortages and 'technostress' as the sector navigates digital transformation and a surge in orders.

The maritime industry is facing a series of workforce challenges as it navigates a period of rapid change and surging demand, according to recent reports. In an interview with Hellenic Shipping News, Irene Rosberg of the Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics program warned that the industry needs 'a different kind of leader' today. 'Shipping has long rewarded technical excellence,' she said, 'but that model is no longer enough.' Leaders must now also possess strategic vision and people management skills to guide their organizations through digital transformation and other industry shifts. The labor shortage issue is particularly acute in South Korea, a global shipbuilding powerhouse. According to Hellenic Shipping News, Korean shipbuilders are 'facing serious labor shortage amid order surge,' as the industry struggles to secure enough skilled domestic workers. The government and industry are working to address the problem, but it remains a significant challenge. Meanwhile, mental health experts are cautioning that the increased use of digital tools and processes on ships could lead to 'technostress' among crews. As ships become more connected and automated, seafarers must grapple with a growing array of software and hardware, which can take a toll on their wellbeing, reports Hellenic Shipping News. Taken together, these workforce challenges underscore the need for the maritime industry to adapt its leadership, training, and support systems to meet the evolving demands of the modern shipping business.
